How Kay Votes On: Corporate Welfare
Background
One of the core planks in the Republican platform is disdain for welfare. They claim their philosophy is one of self-sufficience, of pulling oneself up by one's own bootstraps. It's ironic then, that Republicans like Sen. Hutchison vote so often to prop up corporate profits with government subsidies.
Some examples:
H.R. 2646 - She voted "yea" on this farm bill, which greatly expanded agricultural subsidies for big agribusiness (passed - May 8, 2002).
H.R. 6 - She voted "yea" on this bill to provide huge subisidies and loan guarantees for private power plants (passed - Jul. 29, 2005).
S.Amdt 1026 - She voted "nay" on this effort to stop the government from paying for logging roads - used exclusively by private timber companies - in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska (failed - Jun. 29, 2005).
